GREEN OAK RANCH
North San Diego County’s Best Kept Secret
Green Oak Ranch is a collection of gently rolling 300-400 foot hills, meadows, and a 30+ acre flood plain. The hills are covered with Coastal Chaparral (e.g., Chamise, Scrub Oak, Sage, Buckwheat, Sumac and Prickly Pear Cactus) intersected with private hiking trails. The many stately Oak, Eucalyptus, Sycamore and Willow trees, as well as reeds, nettles, fennel and various ferns, join with rustic environs in creating a natural buffer from outside urbanization.
Green Oak Ranch abounds in native fauna. Animal species observed on our grounds include Quail, Red Tail hawk, Gnatcatcher, Cottontail Rabbit, Ground Squirrel, Lizard, poisonous and non-poisonous snakes, Coyote, Bobcat, Raccoon, Skunk and Opossum. The Green Oak Ranch Nature Center exhibits indigenous varieties of snakes, hawks, owls, Coyote, Raccoon along with common farm animals, e.g., chickens, goats, pigs, peacocks, llamas and miniature horses. Many schools and home-school groups use Green Oak Ranch for outdoor education classes.
A gently flowing tributary of Agua Hedionda meanders from east to west across Green Oak Ranch, joining Buena Creek near the Ranch’s chapel. The Ranch also has a small pond that is a popular spot for ducks, catfish, turtles, frogs and other aquatic life.
Though Green Oak Ranch remains largely undisturbed, the surrounding area is urbanized with residential, retail/wholesale and industrial development.
Soon after the City of Vista was incorporated (1963), a planned community known as Shadowridge began developing along the northern and western borders of Green Oak Ranch. Shadowridge, sometimes referred to as “the Jewel of Vista,” has 10,000 residents (13% of Vista’s total population, and 29% of the City’s registered voters) living in 2,000 single family dwellings, 500 condominiums and 1,500 apartment units. (The area immediately surrounding Shadowridge, i.e., “Greater Shadowridge” is estimated to include up to 50% of the City’s registered voters.)
Shadowridge boasts an 18-hole golf course and country club with a 15,000 square foot clubhouse, three commercial plazas, 26 homeowners associations, a bi-monthly newsletter, and other community amenities. In 1978 Shadowridge was annexed to the City of Vista. Seven years later, in 1985, Vista annexed an additional 819.5 acres, including all of Green Oak Ranch.
Large-scale commercial and industrial development predominates along the southern edge of Green Oak Ranch. A 1,200 acre industrial park, home to hundreds of businesses and thousands of workers, is within easy walking distance along Green Oak Ranch’s south and western borders.
The unique topography of Green Oak Ranch screens much of the surrounding urbanization, allowing Green Oak Ranch to remain rustic and amazingly separate, but central within a burgeoning developmental center of northern San Diego County.
